Lingka tradition thrives as leisure economy in Lhasa
In Lhasa, Xizang autonomous region, locals have a beloved leisure tradition called "lingka", the Tibetan word for "garden" or "park".
Similar to picnicking or camping, lingka is how people relax whenever they have free time. They pack food and drinks, head to grassy meadows or wooded mountain valleys, and spend hours eating, drinking, and enjoying nature with family and friends.
For farmers and herders around Lhasa, the lingka economy has become a vital channel to increase income and prosperity. Many rural families now run lingka sites.
Traditionally, people flocked outdoors to take advantage of the blue skies from May to September, but times are changing. With improved living standards, a new trend of indoor lingka has emerged. Even during the winter off-season, people can gather in cozy glass-enclosed spaces. These venues offer full menus with Tibetan dishes, beverages, and coffee.
