During Shanghai Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027, Nike unveiled its all-new local creation collection, comprising the Nike Shifted Utility Collection and Jordan Tailored Sport Collection. Developed end-to-end by local teams and marking the brand's 45th anniversary in China, the collection marks a milestone in Nike's local creation capabilities.

According to Flavia Cervantes, vice-president of Local Creation for Nike Greater China, the design logic stems from observing how young Chinese consumers live. "Our philosophy right now is designing products for how China moves," Cervantes added.

Instead of resorting to symbolic local elements, the design team observed youth scenes — running crews, music festivals and urban trail races — and discovered that young consumers switch rapidly between commuting, sports and social occasions without compromising function, quality or personal style. A single piece that fits multiple roles and styling options has become a wardrobe staple.

The two lines speak in distinct ways.

The Shifted Utility Collection focuses on urban mobility, featuring modular pieces such as 3-in-1 jackets, convertible skirt-pants and asymmetric parkas with adjustable zippers, supported by technical warmth materials, natural and blended fibers, and earth tones. The Jordan Tailored Sport Collection uses Michael Jordan's iconic off-court look as its creative core.

Cervantes explained that Jordan's tailored suits, fine leather jackets and sharply cut pieces still resonate. The line reinterprets that off-court style for China's urban street scene, pairing the crispness of tailoring with the comfort of sportswear. Five custom-developed fabrics exclusive to the Chinese market underpin both lines, optimized for local climate and wearing preferences.

Cervantes also noted China's unique market dynamics. The country's fashion cycle outpaces most global markets, she said, so the local team operates with a startup mindset to respond quickly to shifting tastes.

China's mature textile manufacturing ecosystem likewise supports rapid iteration, enabling the team to work closely with top manufacturing partners on fabric testing, pattern optimization, and sample production — efficiently turning street-level insights into wearable products, she explained.

Elliott Hill, president and CEO of Nike Inc, framed local creation as core to Nike's long-term China strategy. He said local creation starts with real consumers on the streets, translating firsthand insights into desirable products with emotional resonance.

"The China today is not following. The China today is leading," said Hill, adding that the deep convergence of sports, culture, art, and street fashion is fostering a life-style and fashion ecosystem with a distinct Chinese character, unlocking vast growth potential.

Cathy Sparks, vice-president and general manager for Nike Greater China, described local creation from a global perspective as a natural extension of Nike's innovation legacy, combining world-class technical expertise with local consumer insights — China-born styles and trends poised to reach the world.

"We're seeing China influence fashion and style and innovation globally," Sparks added.

The local collections will hit select Nike and Jordan stores nationwide on Nov 12. Looking ahead, Nike's local creation team will expand into more categories and deepen local talent and supply chain development to keep responding to Chinese consumers' evolving needs.
