Goitered gazelles are becoming an increasingly common sight on the southeastern edge of the Tengger Desert in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, as decades of desert restoration have improved wildlife habitats.
A 2025 survey estimated the gazelle population in and around the Shapotou National Nature Reserve in Zhongwei at 811, with a margin of error of 77. Over the past two years, infrared cameras have collected more than 5,500 images of the animals.
