Three Jiangsu universities to pay salaries using digital renminbi
Multiple universities in Jiangsu province recently announced a plan to pay salaries using digital renminbi, according to Nanfang Daily.
The finance office of Yangzhou University released a notice on Oct 20. Citing a preliminary notice from the provincial department of finance, it announced that starting November 2026, salaries for the university's employees on the official staff establishment and personnel under agency employment arrangements will be paid through digital renminbi wallets. Affected staff are required to open and upgrade their digital renminbi wallets by Oct 23, based on their existing salary bank cards.
The finance office of Nantong University issued a similar notice, adding that since salaries and performance bonuses are paid into separate accounts, wallets must be activated for both.
The finance and accounting office of Jiangsu Normal University's notice said that to implement national arrangements for advancing the digital renminbi pilot program, further streamline the salary disbursement process, improve payment efficiency, and safeguard the security of fund flows, the university would roll out digital renminbi salary disbursement for its staff in stages, in line with policies from government departments.
