Wang Fengchao, former mayor of Chengdu, Sichuan province's capital city, has been prosecuted on charges of taking bribes, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said on Thursday.

The Changsha People's Procuratorate in Hunan province recently filed an indictment against Wang with the Changsha Intermediate People's Court, according to the SPP.

Prosecutors allege that Wang took advantage of a series of senior positions he held at State-owned enterprises, the Sichuan provincial government, and Chengdu to seek benefits for others and illegally accept an especially large amount of money and valuables.

The positions cited in the indictment include senior posts at Sichuan Changhong Electronic Group, vice-mayor of Neijiang, deputy director of the Sichuan Provincial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, chairman of Sichuan Development Holding Co, vice-governor of Sichuan, and mayor of Chengdu.

Prosecutors said Wang should be held criminally responsible for bribery. During the review and prosecution process, prosecutors informed Wang of his procedural rights, questioned him, and heard the opinions of his defense counsel, the SPP said.

The case was investigated by the National Commission of Supervision before being transferred to prosecutors for review and prosecution. The SPP approved Wang's arrest on suspicion of bribery and designated the Changsha People's Procuratorate to handle the case.

Wang, 60, a native of Sichuan, began working in 1986 and spent nearly two decades with Sichuan Changhong and its predecessor companies before moving into government.

He became vice-mayor of Neijiang in 2005 and deputy director of the provincial State-owned assets regulator in 2007. Wang later served as general manager and then chairman of Sichuan Airlines.

In 2015, he became chairman of Sichuan Development Holding Co, a position he held until 2020. He became vice-governor of Sichuan in September 2019 before being appointed deputy Party chief and acting mayor of Chengdu in 2020. He later became mayor.

Wang was placed under investigation in November 2025 while serving as the mayor of Chengdu. He was expelled from the Communist Party of China and dismissed from public office in June 2026.

Anti-graft authorities said in a statement that Wang had a seriously distorted view of political performance, pursued "image projects" and "vanity projects" to seek promotion, resisted investigation, and engaged in superstitious activities.

He was also found to have failed to report personal matters as required, engaged in profit-making activities in violation of regulations, improperly interfered in market and judicial activities, and failed to properly perform his duties, it said.

Authorities also said Wang used his positions to seek benefits for others in cadre appointments, project contracting, financing, and business operations in exchange for large amounts of money and valuables.
