Top political adviser urges efforts to create a better life for people of all ethnic groups

BEIJING -- China's top political adviser Wang Huning on Monday called for efforts to lead people of all ethnic groups in working together to create a better life.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks when he met with 150 representatives of ethnic minorities from across China.

China is home to 56 ethnic groups. The 55 ethnic minorities collectively number 125 million, accounting for nearly one-tenth of the national population, according to the 7th national population census.

Noting that the cause of ethnic unity and progress during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period faces new circumstances and tasks, Wang called for efforts to study and implement the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law.

The law, a fundamental law governing ethnic affairs, took effect on July 1 to strengthen law-based governance and promote unity and common prosperity among the country's 56 ethnic groups.

Wang urged the representatives to forge a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, and to make greater efforts to promote the common advancement of all ethnic groups toward socialist modernization and foster extensive interactions, exchanges and integration among people of all ethnic groups.

He expressed hope that the representatives will devote themselves to the building of Chinese modernization, help ethnic minority areas pursue paths of quality development that draw on their own strengths and characteristics, and boost development and raise living standards in border areas in the new era.

The 150 representatives were recognized at the provincial level or above for their contributions to ethnic unity and progress since 2024.
