A passing of the torch has also happened in the WNBA, and helped Chinese talent take a firm foothold in the league since legendary center Zheng Haixia became the first Chinese, and first Asian, to be drafted back in 1997.
Her inspiring, yet injury-enforced, 34-game stint in the WNBA paved the way for, so far, seven more Chinese players to lace up in regular season games in the league, which has seen a huge spike in popularity in recent years.
The towering combo of Han Xu and Li Yueru, both formidable centers on China's current national roster, are flying the flag for their country in the WNBA with the New York Liberty and Dallas Wings, respectively.
