Mainland reiterates opposition to arms sales to Taiwan

The Chinese mainland on Wednesday reiterated its opposition to United States arms sales to Taiwan, stressing that the Taiwan question should not be subject to interference by external forces.

In response to reports that US arms sales to Taiwan could be discussed at the upcoming visit of the Chinese leader to the US, Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said, "We firmly oppose US arms sales to China's Taiwan region. This position is consistent and clear."

She stated that Taiwan is part of China and that the Taiwan question is China's internal affair, which brooks no interference by external forces.

"The historical and legal fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China cannot be changed by anyone or any force," Zhu said, stressing that China will inevitably achieve reunification.
