How a Shanxi village keeps Guan Gong's spirit alive

Heritage is not always confined behind museum glass. Sometimes it stands at the heart of a village, where people pass by it every day, know its stories and, over generations, help keep it standing.
That is the story of the Qiangxia Guandi Temple in Qiangxia — a village that is in Peijie town in Xia county, administered by the prefecture-level city of Yuncheng, located in North China's Shanxi province.
Built in 1347 during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and expanded and rebuilt in later periods, the temple was listed in 2019 as one of the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units. It is recognized as Shanxi's largest and best-preserved village-level Guandi Temple.
