Beijing seeks to strengthen role of UN

China hopes to work with the international community to reinvigorate the authority and role of the United Nations and strengthen cooperation on global governance, the Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday ahead of Vice-President Han Zheng's visit to New York for the UN General Assembly general debate.

Han will attend the general debate of the 81st session of the UNGA from Thursday to Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a regular news briefing.

During his stay, Han will also attend a high-level dialogue hosted by China to mark the fifth anniversary of the Global Development Initiative, and meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, President of the UNGA's 81st session Khalilur Rahman, and leaders of other countries.

Guo said the world is undergoing accelerating changes unseen in a century, with transformation and turbulence intertwined and risks and challenges continuing to emerge.

Against this backdrop, he emphasized the UN's central role in global governance and the importance of the General Assembly's general debate as an opportunity for countries to build political consensus and coordinate multilateral action.

Noting that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the UN, Guo said Han will set out China's views and positions on the international situation, major international and regional issues, and the work of the UN.

Han will also outline China's actions to uphold true multilateralism and promote world peace and development, as China seeks to strengthen global cooperation toward building a community with a shared future for humanity, Guo added.
