Nominations for 2026 election committee subsector ordinary elections to begin in Hong Kong

HONG KONG -- The nomination period for the 2026 Election Committee Subsector (ECSS) ordinary elections will run from Oct 7 until Oct 20, the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said on Tuesday.

The numbers of members of the Election Committee to be elected by each of the subsectors were gazetted and uploaded to the election website on Tuesday. If the number of validly nominated candidates for an Election Committee subsector exceeds the number of Election Committee members to be elected by that subsector, a poll will be held on Nov 22, according to the REO.

A spokesman for the REO said that a person nominated as a candidate must be a registered geographical constituency elector aged 18 or above, who is a registered voter for the relevant subsector or has a substantial connection with that subsector.

According to Annex I and Annex II of the HKSAR Basic Law, the Election Committee, composed of 1,500 members, shall be responsible for electing the chief executive designate and part of the members of the HKSAR's Legislative Council (LegCo). The Election Committee shall also be responsible for nominating candidates for the chief executive and LegCo members.
