Step into Guan Gong's legendary world through XR technology

At the Guan Gong Cultural Digital Experience Center in Yuncheng, Shanxi province, visitors can gain a new perspective on one of China's most enduring cultural figures through an extended reality (XR) interactive film.

Titled Guan Yunchang: The Divine Warrior, the immersive film uses XR technology to bring the legendary story of Guan Gong to life. After putting on the XR equipment, visitors no longer just watch a story unfold on a screen. Instead, they are drawn into the narrative, experiencing the legendary moments of Guan Gong battling evil in an immersive environment filled with sights, sounds, and interactive elements.

The experience offers a fresh way to encounter traditional Chinese culture, particularly for younger visitors and international travelers who may be unfamiliar with the stories related with Guan Gong.

Guan Gong, also known as Guan Yu or Guandi, was a military general who lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220). Over the centuries, he evolved from a historical figure into a widely revered cultural icon, with his image and stories becoming closely associated with loyalty, integrity, bravery, and righteousness. His influence has extended beyond China, with Guan Gong temples and cultural traditions found in overseas Chinese communities.

Yuncheng is known as the hometown of Guan Gong, and his legacy remains deeply woven into the city's cultural identity. The city has held the Guan Gong Cultural Tourism Festival for more than three decades, turning the figure's enduring appeal into an important cultural and tourism resource.
