Southern Medical University sets up special task force to further probe student's death

Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong province, has set up a special task force to further investigate the case in which a student died after he fell from a high-rise apartment building.

Police have ruled out the possibility of a homicide following an on-site investigation and confirmed that the death was caused by a fall from height, the university said in a statement released on Wednesday evening.

The tragedy took place in the university's Baiyun campus at about 1:55 am on Tuesday, when the student surnamed Chen was found dead after falling from a height. But the statement did not reveal details.

The university is deeply saddened by this incident and extends its deepest condolences to the victim's family, said the statement.

Following the incident, the university attached great importance to the case, immediately set up a special task force to fully cooperate with the police in investigating the case and assist the family with follow-up arrangements, it said.

The university will further strengthen mental health services for its students in the weeks to come and urged all sectors of society to respect the deceased and refrain from spreading rumors, the university added.
