China firmly opposes malicious speculation without factual basis about the cause of the recent mudslide disaster at a border crossing between China and Nepal, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Monday.
Guo made the remarks at a regular news briefing in response to inappropriate remarks made by some foreign media outlets about the cause of the disaster.
Experts and official agencies from both China and Nepal have conducted preliminary assessments, and their analysis indicates that the disaster was triggered by the collapse of a high-altitude glacier in Nepal, Guo said.
"In the face of a major disaster, we firmly oppose malicious speculation that has no factual basis," he added.
