Icelanders vote against resuming EU accession talks

REYKJAVIK - Icelanders voted against resuming negotiations on the country's accession to the EU in a referendum held Saturday, local media reported on Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, vote counting had been completed in all constituencies except the Southwest Constituency, whose remaining votes were "almost impossible" to change the outcome, according to Icelandic public broadcaster RUV.

Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009. Accession talks were suspended in 2013 after a Eurosceptic government took office. However, according to Icelandic parliamentary documents, the European Commission has maintained that the application was never formally withdrawn.
