Oswaldo Vigas, a towering figure in Latin American modern art, is currently being celebrated at the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. The retrospective exhibition, titled Reality Is What I Imagine, showcases a selection of monumental works spanning the artist's seven-decade career.
Offering viewers a deep dive into his artistic journey, the show highlights Vigas' ongoing exploration of his heritage and his imaginative reworking of reality.
Recognized for bridging the postwar avant-garde movements in Venezuela and Paris, Vigas occupies a significant place in the narrative of Latin American art, charting a path that both embraced global currents and remained firmly rooted in local traditions.
With connections to eminent modernist figures such as Pablo Picasso, Wifredo Lam, Victor Vasarely, Jesus Rafael Soto, and Alejandro Otero, Vigas cultivated an artistic practice that turned cultural distinctions into the driving force behind his creativity. His work consistently pushed back against conventional trends, extending the boundaries of what art could represent.
The exhibition is jointly curated by Gabriela Rangel, a Venezuelan curator based in the United States, and Jiang Jun, a curator from China. Together, they have created a platform for cross-Pacific dialogue, contributing to the ongoing narrative of the contemporary Global South. By exploring Vigas' genre-defying oeuvre, the curators underline a polycentric and multidirectional global art framework, emphasizing the interconnectedness of diverse cultural paradigms.
Wang Shaoqiang, director of the Guangdong Museum of Art, said, "Vigas did not conform to the homogenizing tendencies of European modernism, nor did he retreat into the romanticism of regional nostalgia. Instead, he envisioned an 'amphibian modernity' — an artistic philosophy that exists fluidly between land and water, tradition and progress, the local and the universal. Through his practice, Vigas grappled with a pivotal question: How can societies in flux preserve the cultural legacies that sustain them?"
According to curator Jiang Jun, introducing the work of Vigas to a Chinese audience fosters a cultural synthesis that reflects both global and localized perspectives.
"It provides an opportunity to explore the role of cultural continuity within the intricate and interwoven landscape of global art," Jiang said.
Through this retrospective which runs until Nov 22, visitors are not only exposed to Vigas' artistic mastery but are also invited to engage in the broader conversation about heritage, transformation, and the ever-evolving dialogue between cultures.
