Yinchuan university allows students to bring pets to campus

In a move to enhance student life and learning outcomes, Yinchuan University of Science and Technology in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region has recently introduced a policy allowing students to bring their pets to campus.

The initiative, unveiled via the university's official WeChat channel on Sunday, is set to begin with the freshman class of 2026.

The policy primarily targets incoming freshmen, with an emphasis on students enrolled in pet-related majors. These students will have the opportunity to integrate academic learning with hands-on pet care experience. The initiative aims to deepen their academic knowledge while offering them the chance to experience the responsibilities of pet companionship.

The university has provided guidelines for the types of pets allowed on campus. Permitted animals include cats, small compliant dogs, and other gentle domestic pets. However, large dogs, breeds banned in urban areas, aggressive dogs, exotic pets, and any animals posing safety risks are strictly prohibited.

To support the initiative, the university has newly established a pet boarding facility on campus. The facility will offer professional care with modern infrastructure and individualized management for each pet, including regular health updates and vaccination checks. Staffed by trained pet care professionals, the center will provide daily care, health monitoring, and behavioral guidance. It includes dedicated activity areas, scientifically designed living environments, and a robust cleaning system to ensure a safe and comfortable habitat for the animals.

Students interested in participating in the program can apply online. The application process includes verification of each pet's vaccination and health records, along with an evaluation of the student's responsibility, pet care knowledge, and time management skills. All participants must sign a management agreement outlining their responsibilities and obligations.

Currently, almost all public universities and colleges in China forbid pets in dormitories or on campus, although some private colleges offer boarding centers or pet parks. As the new fall semester approaches, several schools have indicated changes. On Saturday, Kunming City College announced that it would start allowing pets on campus, including in certain dorms, though not in dining halls. The next day, Chongqing Metropolitan College of Science and Technology launched its own pet-friendly plan.
