China's population aged 60 and above reaches 323.38 million

China's population aged 60 and above reached 323.38 million by the end of 2025, accounting for 23 percent of the country's total population, according to an official report released on Friday.

The figures were published in the 2025 National Report on the Development of Aging, jointly released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the China National Committee on Aging.

The report showed that the population aged 65 and above totaled 223.65 million by the end of 2025, accounting for 15.9 percent of the national population.

China's old-age dependency ratio for people aged 65 and above reached 23.1 percent, meaning there were roughly 23 elderly people for every 100 working-age people, reflecting pressures on the eldercare system.

The report also highlighted improvements in public health, with average life expectancy rising to 79.25 years nationwide, the report said.

About 53.54 million elderly people nationwide were receiving government subsidies and allowances for senior citizens as of the end of last year, the report added.
