Since the 1950s, the National Museum of China has consistently commissioned artists to create works inspired by major historical events, gradually building a collection of paintings and sculptures of both outstanding artistic merit and profound historical significance. Together, these works form an important chapter in the visual record of the People's Republic of China.

A selection from this enduring body of work is now on display in The People and the Monument, a newly opened long-term exhibition at the museum. Through paintings and sculptures, the exhibition traces the revolutionary journey of the Chinese people, who stood together through hardship under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It presents a sweeping historical panorama of the nation's struggle, resilience and achievements in building New China.
