Beijing police crack down on bike theft, reaffirm commitment to public safety

Beijing police have resolved over 690 theft cases since early June, demonstrating their commitment to safeguarding residents' property, the Municipal Public Security Bureau said.

In a concerted effort to combat e-bike theft, the capital's police are intensifying their crackdown on the illegal resale and handling of stolen goods. They have increased patrols and established watch posts in high-crime areas, including shopping districts, transportation hubs, older residential neighborhoods, and night markets, the bureau reported on Thursday.

A notable case occurred in Haidian district, where police resolved an e-bike theft in just eight hours. A woman, identified by her surname Wang, parked her e-bike at a subway station before leaving on a business trip. Upon her return, the bike was missing. Surveillance footage showed a coach pulling up next to the bike lot and her bike vanished shortly after. Officers tracked down the coach, detained the driver, and found the stolen e-bike in the baggage compartment. The driver confessed and has been placed in administrative custody.

In another incident, a bicycle theft ring in Tongzhou district was dismantled with the help of a vigilant security guard. Residents had reported multiple bike thefts in the Lucheng area, but investigators had only a blurry security camera image to work with. Police shared the suspect's description with local volunteers. On July 10, a guard on patrol spotted a man matching the description, discreetly followed him, and alerted the police. Officers quickly arrived, arrested the suspect, identified as Li, and later recovered a tricycle and three stolen bikes from his residence. Li is now in criminal detention.

The bureau highlighted that the protection of property remains a top priority for Beijing police, who emphasize their unwavering stance against theft and other crimes affecting residents' quality of life.

By combining rapid-response enforcement with comprehensive prevention and control measures, law enforcement is doubling its efforts to maintain safety, the bureau said. The message is clear: safety is not just an abstract concept — it is a tangible reality that Beijing police are determined to uphold for all residents, it added.
