Suzhou to add red light wait times to delivery schedules to reduce unsafe driving
Suzhou, Jiangsu province is set to introduce a pioneering traffic management initiative that incorporates red light waiting times into the delivery timing system for food delivery riders.
Launching this August in two districts, the program aims to alleviate the pressure on riders to rush through traffic signals and foster safer, more civilized driving habits.
Traditionally, delivery times only accounted for travel distance and duration, neglecting the time spent waiting at red lights. This oversight often pressured riders to engage in risky behaviors, such as running red lights or riding against traffic.
According to Suzhou police, the new policy addresses this by integrating waiting times into the delivery calculations, thus removing the dilemma of choosing between safety and punctuality.
The reform will connect traffic data with delivery platforms. Additionally, mandatory rest periods after four consecutive hours of deliveries and a forced logout after 12 hours aim to reduce dangerous driving behaviors.
Moreover, a monthly incentive program will reward riders for safe driving, with a dual mechanism of penalty points for violations and bonus points for voluntary compliance. Accumulated points can be exchanged for various benefits, including cash rewards, phone bill subsidies, and housing privileges.
