Most people affected by flooding in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region have moved into temporary shelters with the waters showing signs of receding, city officials said at a news conference on Monday night.

However, local authorities warned about the severe risk of further widespread damage, making follow-up rescue work difficult.

Further rain and river surges could expand the disaster and strain resettlement efforts.

Levee breaches and overflow trapped residents on high ground, in need of restored telecom, rescue access and daily goods.

Rescuers patrolling flooded areas by speedboat will evacuate all stranded people, local authorities said.

Preemptive relocation efforts have covered most at-risk residents outside the core disaster zone, with evacuation standby plans ready for downstream villages.

Highways, railways, power, communication and supply chains outside the core zone continue to function normally.

Official data shows 55,000 residents affected, with 48,000 evacuated, and two killed during the flood.
