China's Juncao technology to industrialize in Democratic Republic of the Congo

China's Juncao technology, a sustainable agricultural method developed by Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, is pivoting to nationwide industrialization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to improve local livelihoods and drive sustainable development, according to the university.

The project accelerated earlier this year after the DRC's 76th council of ministers approved a report to integrate the technology, planning a flagship demonstration center in its capital, Kinshasa, with expansion across 145 areas in the country.

Juncao, meaning mushroom and grass, was invented by Lin Zhanxi, a professor from the university in Fuzhou, Fujian province. It allows farmers to grow mushrooms using herbaceous plants, removing the need to cut down trees. Since 1994, Juncao has served as a fixture of China's South-South cooperation. It has been deployed in over 100 countries and regions, including Papua New Guinea and Rwanda.
