Elga Coal secures independent logistics
Nestled in the permafrost region of Yakutia in Russia's Far East, the Elga Coal Complex has become a symbol of industrial ambition and worker welfare. As the largest coking coal deposit in Russia and one of the largest in the world, the mine boasts reserves of 2.2 billion metric tons.
The complex is operated by a group of companies that extract, process, transport and sell premium coal with low levels of harmful impurities such as sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus. The coal serves as a key raw material for producing coke used in blast furnace steelmaking and is in high demand globally. Most of Elga's coal is exported to the Asia-Pacific region, with China being the main consumer.
In 2020, when the Elga deposit came under new ownership, the production volume was 4 million tons. In just five years, it increased more than eightfold, reaching 35.1 million tons in 2025, which was the largest output in the mine's history.
In April, 3.34 million tons of coking coal concentrate were shipped from the Elga Coal Complex to Far East ports. This was a record monthly shipment volume for a single coal-mining enterprise in the history of Russia, according to the company.
"These record figures are the logical outcome of investment decisions and the hard work of all company employees," said Alexander Isaev, CEO of Elga Management Company.
"In a short time, we created a unique production complex, including mining facilities, the Pacific Railway, a port complex, an airport and other infrastructure. The Elga deposit development project has become a hallmark of our country's coal industry," Isaev noted.
This sharp increase in production was the result of large-scale investments in both mining and transport infrastructure.
High-performance excavators and dump trucks have been purchased. Eleven coal-washing plants with an annual capacity of 38.5 million tons have been built and equipped with modern machinery.
The Elga Coal Complex has its own accredited coal chemistry laboratory.
In 2025, the laboratory processed approximately 10,000 coal samples per month, offering quality certifications that are vital for both domestic logistics and exports.
