Veteran Kunqu Opera actress brings 600-year-old art to campus

Beijing Language and Culture University invited Wei Chunrong, the veteran Kunqu Opera actress from the Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre, to deliver a lecture titled "The Contemporary Expression of 600-Year-Old Kunqu Opera" on Wednesday. 

The event, organized by the China Theatre Association, attracted more than 200 students and faculty members, with nearly 80 percent of the audience being international students from countries including France, Italy and Egypt.

During the lecture, Wei meticulously explained the history of Kunqu Opera, its artistic characteristics, and its contemporary relevance. She provided an in-depth discussion, demonstrating various aspects of Kunqu Opera, from its role and classic repertoire to vocal styles and cultural significance, offering the audience a comprehensive understanding of the ancient art form.
