Capturing details

Li Keran (1907-89), a pioneer of 20th-century ink art, said that painting requires a thorough reading of two "books" — the world and history. He left behind a vast body of drawings and sketchbooks that show how he engaged with these two subjects, particularly when he drew outside during his travels to scenic spots both in China and overseas.

A Study of Small Details, an ongoing exhibition at the Li Keran Art Foundation gallery, focuses on these sketches as preparatory pieces for Li's finished works that define 20th-century Chinese painting. Created mostly using monochromatic ink, the sketches capture vivid details he observed outdoors, demonstrating how he connected nature, art, people, and the world. The exhibition runs until Feb 10 at the Fangzhuang Culture and Art Center.

10:30 am-5 pm, daily. Building 26, District 4 Fangqunyuan, Fangzhuang, Fengtai district, Beijing. 010-6720-3123.
