The weeklong Dunhuang Cup competition for the traditional Chinese musical instrument, the erhu, ended with a concert in Beijing on Aug 21.

From Aug 15 to 21, the event attracted over 2,000 people to apply to compete, with nearly 1,300 competitors standing out.

Three concerts were staged during the competition, including one paying tribute to the Chinese musician and composer Liu Tianhua (1895-1932), known for his innovative erhu works, and another gathering various generations of Chinese erhu players, including Huang Xiaoqing and Zhang Haiyue.

Co-organized by the China Musical Instrument Association and the Dunhuang Cup, a series of competitions for traditional Chinese musical instruments was launched 16 years ago. This year marked the sixth edition of the erhu competition.
