China has established five new medical disciplines including Geriatrics and Health in a bid to cultivate talent with urgent needs and provide support for safeguarding public health, according to a guideline released by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

The Professional Guidelines for Training Talent in the Healthcare Industry aims to guide universities to establish several adaptive and pioneering new medical disciplines to meet the nation's demands and emerging trends in the health sector, the guideline said.

The five new disciplines are Medical Device and Equipment Engineering, Geriatrics Medicine and Health, Healthcare and Medical Insurance, Pharmaceutical Economics and Management, as well as and Biomedical Data Sciences.

The new medical disciplines have been proposed as references for relevant higher institutes in establishing new medical programs, according to the guidelines.
