College alum loses in court after failing to make promised donation
When a college alumnus who failed to fulfill his promise to donate 11 million yuan ($1,579,100), he was sued by the institution, causing quite a stir on social media.
"With the donor talking big and the university filing suit to ask for the donation, neither side looks good," one netizen commented.
Wu You pledged the donation to China University of Mining and Technology in April 2019. Wu runs a business consulting company after dropping out of the university in his sophomore year, according to Jimu News.
However, as of Aug 9, 2022 when the trial was held, the representative of the university said they did not receive any donation from Wu, who claimed his company was running out of money and his offer to pay the donation in installments was denied by the university. Wu said he needed time to fulfill the obligation, and denial of the donation was never an option for him.
On Feb 21, after failing to make the payment within the period specified, Wu was listed as a dishonest debtor and had his luxury consumption restricted according to a court order issued by the People's Court in Tongshan district of Xuzhou in Jiangsu province.
