More taxis have been allowed back on the roads of Shanghai as the COVID-19 situation in the city continues to improve.

According to Dong Jiyuan, vice president of the Shanghai Dazhong Transportation Group, one of China's largest taxi companies, 645 of the company's taxis returned to the roads on Tuesday and Wednesday. The figure increased to 1,072 on Thursday.

Residents can reserve cab services by phone.

"Drivers are required to undergo training on COVID-19 prevention and control measures and sign a document to guarantee that they will provide safe services before work," said Dong at a news briefing on Thursday.

Wearing N95 face masks when providing services and taking regular nucleic acid and antigen testing are also required of drivers, whom will be supervised by an AI system installed in their vehicles, according to Dong.

"In addition, vehicles put into operation will go through safety inspections, maintenance and cleaning and disinfection," he added.
