Pop star Kris Wu arrested on suspicion of rape
Kris Wu, one of China's most popular pop stars, has been arrested on suspicion of rape.
The people's procuratorate in Beijing's Chaoyang district posted a statement on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like platform, on Monday evening that it has approved the arrest of a suspect surnamed Wu on suspicion of rape after a review of the case in line with the law.
No more details have been disclosed so far.
Chinese media outlets quickly confirmed the suspect is the 30-year-old Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Kris Wu, who was detained by the district's police for the alleged crime on July 31.
The police said at that time Wu was placed under investigation after being accused of tricking young women into having sex.
Wu's case triggered huge public attention in June when a woman named Du Meizhu posted statements online alleging Wu had lured young women and girls under the age of 18 to have sex by claiming he recruited actresses. Du said she was one of the victims.
The allegations made many brands cut ties with the star, who was born in Guangzhou, South China's Guangdong province, and some of his promotional activities were canceled.
