The Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, is a character from the classic Chinese mythological novel Journey to the West, which was created by writer Wu Cheng’en during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The novel is about the adventures of a Tang Dynasty (618-907) monk and his three disciples during their journey to obtain Buddhist scriptures.

Directed by Wan Laiming, the film brought the first few chapters of the novel to the screen, showing how the monkey challenged the powers in heaven and defeated celestial warriors before the start of the journey.
