Beijing fines supermarket for not sorting garbage

A supermarket in Beijing's Fengtai district was given a ticket of 9,000 yuan ($1,268) because it failed to obey the city's waste sorting regulations. It was the first penalty given since the capital began enforcing its citywide household garbage sorting program on May 1.

Beijing's urban management commission found out during the routine inspection on Monday that an Wu-mart had put only one garbage bin in its fruit section to separate rotten fruit. Paper and plastic packaging must be put into different waste containers, the commission said on Wednesday.

The only garbage bin was not marked for type of waste, and commission staff wrote the ticket on site.

The commission said it will continue inspections to promote waste sorting, but mainly by education and persuasion.
