Its most famous practitioner was Yang Luchan who learned his art in early 19th century from Chen Changxing while working in the Chen family as a servant.

Later, Yang Luchan took his art to Beijing where his fighting ability was in great demand and resulted in him being appointed combat instructor to the royal court of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Over the years, Yang Lu-chan taught many students and from the most talented disciples, aka Tu Di or Di Zi,—students who have an in-depth understanding and thorough command of the skill, new styles developed.

The five major tai chi styles are Chen, Yang, Wu, Sun and Li, with variations including the widely practiced Wudang, Cheng Man-Ching and less well-known Hao styles.
