Domestic abuser detained after viral video
A husband who beat his wife after she installed a video camera to collect evidence of domestic violence was detained Tuesday in Heshan, a Pearl River delta city under the administration of Jiangmen in Guangdong province.
A video showing the husband in his 40s kicking his wife for over 40 seconds, their young child crying and screaming beside her, has gone viral online since Monday, sparking heated debate and calls for justice.
According to a statement released Tuesday by the Heshan city bureau of public security, police officers went to wife and victim Yao's house when they received her call in the early morning of May 17.
Yao dialed the police hotline for help when she was beaten by her husband, Chen, during a fight.
Chen had admitted he had beaten his wife when he was detained May 18.
Yao suffered a slight wound and was later sent to a nearby hospital for treatment, accompanied by family members.
Investigation of the case is ongoing, the police statement said.
