A driver in Beijing was fined 400 yuan ($58.35) and had six points deducted from his driver’s record for blocking an ambulance during an emergency, online news portal China News reported on Tuesday.

The punishment was announced on the Beijing traffic police micro blog on Sunday night after a video clip was posted online showing a black car deliberately blocking an ambulance on the East Third Ring Road in Beijing.

After investigations by the traffic police, the driver, surnamed Liu, was accused of not keeping the road clear for the ambulance during an emergency and not taking his car for regular safety inspections.

Liu was fined 200 yuan and had three demerit points deducted for each offense. He apologized for his wrongdoing.

In China, each driver’s record begins with 12 points. When all 12 points are removed, a driver will have his or her license revoked by the police and be ordered to study traffic laws for a week. They then have to take an examination in order to have their license reinstated.
