A Geographer in the desert - Experiencing Dunhuang in the mid-1990's

Having been educated as a geographer, desert landscapes were an integral part of my studies. Dunhuang offered some of the finest such topography across the northwest. Several times I would head out walking or cycling, stopping to look, for example, at local courtyard homes entered through decorated, tiled doorways.
