The Xinxing county government will give top priority to developing rural tourism involving Zen Buddhist culture, ecology and leisure, hot springs and rural scenery, Yuan said.
Xinxing, the hometown of Huineng (638-713), the sixth and last Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, was selected as a model tourism zone for the province in May last year. Huineng is also an influential figure in Japanese Zen Buddhism, which stemmed from Chan Buddhism, and has been called one of the three Oriental saints, along with Confucius and Laozi.
According to an official in charge of tourism promotion with the province's Tourism Administration, Guangdong, already a major destination for tourists, will redouble its effort to develop rural tourism.
