Award-winning Japanese film 'Shoplifter' comes to China


The film Shoplifter, the winner of the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in May, has been screening in China since Friday.
The award-winning film is directed by Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, who has two films released in China this year -- The Third Murder screened in March.
Adapted from a real news event in Japan, the film tells the story of an impoverished family who steals to survive.
Hirokazu Kore-eda, born in 1962, is a master of family-themed films, using a plain and simple style to convey deep and meaningful messages. He gained popularity with Chinese audiences with his two films -- Our Little Sister and After the Storm.
Since he started making films in the early 1990s, Hirokazu Kore-eda has directed many well-known films such as I Wish and After Life.
