Law enforcement measures by the Chinese police that target gambling in Southwest China's Yunnan province will not affect legal and legitimate trade in the border area between China and Myanmar, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Tuesday.

Police are investigating gambling in the province and froze a batch of bank accounts that may be involved in the case, Geng said in a daily news conference in Beijing.

Geng said law enforcement departments of both China and Myanmar are cooperating closely on cracking down on cross-border crimes, and China hopes to maintain close communication and coordination with Myanmar during the investigation into the case and safeguard the public's wellbeing.

According to reports, the bank accounts of some Myanmar traders in Ruili, a city in Yunnan, were frozen due to possible involvement with gambling.
