SINGAPORE -- UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari arrived in Singapore from New York early Thursday en route to Myanmar, his spokeswoman said.

"We are waiting for the transfer flight to go to Myanmar," Hua Jiang told AFP from Changi Airport after their plane landed.

She did not give further details, but the next flight to Myanmar is scheduled to leave at 7:55 am local time (2355 GMT).

Gambari is expected to press Myanmar's ruling junta to include opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in its election plans.

The envoy is making his third trip to Myanmar since police and soldiers used force to break up protests led by Buddhist monks in September.
