Dong Xiaowan and Mao Pijiang, an original Yue opera from the Nantong Art Theater, will be performed at the Grand Theater of Suzhou Culture and Arts Center on August 2 and 3.

The opera tells the literary love story of Mao Pijiang and the “most popular courtesan” Dong Xiaowan during the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

Mao was a well-educated man who came from a good family. Dong fell in love with Mao and went home with him, but Mao’s family refused to accept her because of her background. Dong made many efforts over the course of several years with acts of sincerity, kindness and love and eventually was able to move in with the family.

The opera was written by famous playwright Luo Huaizhen and directed by Yang Xiaoqing. Dong Xiaowan and Mao Pijiang will feature actors Xu Liufei and Fan Xiaoping, both excellent Yue opera performers.
