Writing Spring Festival couplets and making fried cakes; people in Hohhot have their own way of observing the kitchen god festival that fell on Jan 20.

This year’s festival fell on Jan 20 which was Dec 23 according to the Chinese lunar calendar, a time historically set to show respect and pray to the god in charge of kitchens. Traditionally, people often clean their house and yard, and shop for things in preparation for the New Year.
