The Inner Mongolia autonomous region obtained 525 science and technological achievements in 2012, including 85 in the field of basic theory, 438 in applied technology, and two for soft science. The region applied for 4,732 patents and was granted 3,090. During the year, 3,463 technology contracts were signed, involving total contract capital of 21.84 billion yuan ($3.59 billion), almost a two-fold increase from 2011.

By the end of 2012, the region had 48 institutions of higher education, with a total amount that enrolled in the year of 110,900 students and total students of 391,400. Among them, there were 105,800 students from various ethnic minority groups, including 91,300 Mongolians. A total of 105,100 students graduated in 2012.

By the end of the year, the region's nine post-graduate institutions had 5,698 new students and total students of 16,227. Among them, there were 4,970 students from ethnic minority groups, including 4,447 Mongolians.

There were 276 institutions for secondary vocational education in 2012, with a total enrolled students of 96,000 and a total student number of 275,500, including 47,200 students from ethnic minority groups. A total of 109,500 students graduated that year.

The region had 272 high schools by the end of 2012, with an enrolled student number of 171,700 and a total student number of 500,300. Among them, there were 136,200 students from ethnic minority groups, including 120,500 Mongolian students. A total of 161,300 students graduated that year.

The region had 763 middle schools by the end of 2012, with 242,500 new students and a total student number of 746,300. A total of 187,900 students were from ethnic minority groups, including 166,500 Mongolian students. A total of 263,300 students graduated in 2012.

The region had 2,443 middle schools by the end of 2012, with new students of 233,500 and a total student number of 1.37 million. A total of 242,900 students graduated in the year.

The enrollment rate for primary schools was 99.76 percent. There were 492,100 children in kindergartens in the autonomous region in 2012.
