A 1,000 kV UHV AC transmission project starting from western Inner Mongolia to southern Tianjin was recently approved by the State Development and Reform Commission. It is the second UHV project starting from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

Following the 1,000 kV UHV project linking Xilingol League and Shandong province, this newly-approved project beginning in Ordos is the second UHV project starting from the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. It will run through northern Shanxi province, Beijing and stop at Tianjin.

The project will build four 1,000 kV UHV substations in western Inner Mongolia, northern Shanxi, Beijing and Tianjin, and 608 kilometers of UHV AC double transmission lines, with an investment of 17.52 billion yuan ($2.80 billion). The investment in the project's Inner Mongolia section is financed by State Grid Corporation.

The UHV project will increase the region's electricity transmission capacity by 8 million kW, while the total transmission will be 40 billion kW. The region's energy base development and power transmission will benefit from this project. It is expected to speed up the region’s transformation of energy advantages into economic advantages and optimize the region's ecological environment.

A leading group aiming to attend to the projects problems was set up in the region. It will help coordinate the construction works in the project's stops at three levels: provincial, municipal and county. According to the project's construction plan, it will be started in February and concluded in Oct 2016.
