Gansu watermelon hits market in Beijing

Farmers in Baiyin city, in Northwest China's Gansu province are working together with has developed cooperation with the farmers and supermarkets in Beijing, -Tianjin and -Hebei region earlier this year, with around 8,000 tons of Baiyin watermelons and honeydew melon grew in Baiyin have been sold in theis region.

Gansu's Cchamber of Ccommerce's branch in Beijing invited the managers of eight Beijing supermarkets and two catering enterprises to visit Baiyin city this July, under the support of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Commerce.

After the field visit, the Beijing traders signed agreements with Baiyin counterparts on supplying and selling Baiyin fruits and vegetable.

From the middle of July, the melons grew grown in Baiyin have been transported to Beijing and sold in more than 1,000 chain supermarkets, such as Wumart, Hulian and Jingkelong

To promote the sellingsales, Wumart in Beijing also advertised Baiyin melons at on the Beijing Evening News and held the a watermelon festival to publicize Baiyin melons. The promotion resulted in the Baiyin melon demand exceedinged supply in Beijing.

The cooperation with Beijing counterparts has greatly expanded the market of for Baiyin melons, and increased local farmers’ incomes as well. Some farmers said they will earn more than last year from the melon cultivation.
