LANZHOU - At least one person has died and 37 were injured after a truck crashed in a tunnel in northwest China's Gansu province on Friday, local authorities said.

The accident occurred in Dahongshan Tunnel on the Lanzhou-Haikou Highway at 5 p.m. when a truck struck two construction workers, said a spokesman with fire control department of Lanzhou City, the provincial capital.

A coach tailing the truck crashed into blocks in the tunnel as the driver attempted to avoid the out-of-control vehicle, said the spokesman.

By 7:30 pm, one of the workers had been confirmed dead.

The accident is being investigated.
