Death toll in hit-and-run accidents rises to 10

TIANJIN: The death toll in a series of hit-and-run accidents in north China's Tianjin Municipality has risen to 10 as a seriously injured person died at hospital, said local authorities Wednesday.

Nine people were killed at the scene and 11 others injured after the accidents at the Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area Monday morning, said a spokesman with the publicity department of Tianjin municipal committee of the Communist Party of China.

Police have seized the suspect, a 40-year-old man surnamed Zhang, who, in a fit of temper, deliberately hit vehicles, bicycle riders and pedestrians with a bus.

Three police wagons were among the vehicles hit by the bus and four policemen who were trying to stop Zhang were among the injured.

Before the serial accidents, Zhang, a clerk with the Tianbao Transportation Co. based at Tianjin's economic development zone, injured a colleague surnamed Li with a knife in a conflict at around 8 am, police and witnesses said.

Police are still investigating the case.
