The accident occurred at about 10:35 am off the coast of Lianjiang County in southeast China's Fujian Province, a spokesman with the Fujian Provincial Maritime Search and Rescue Center said.

All 10 people aboard the fishing boat fell into water after the sinking, and rescuers saved four of them, the spokesman said.

At least eight ships and a helicopter had been dispatched to search for the missing people, he said.

The fishing boat was registered in Fujian and the cargo vessel registered in the neighboring Zhejiang Province.

The cause of the collision was not immediately known.
