Intel to expand in Shanghai with $24 million investment
Intel is expected to expand in China with an incremental investment of $24 million in Shanghai over the next few years, said Steve Smith, Vice President, Intel, as part of the company's investment in the growth of cloud services and the Internet of Things.
He made the announcement at the company's launch of a data center facility in Shanghai's Zizhu Digital Creativity Hub on Friday, a new facility in Minhang, in recognition of the strong technical talent and pro-innovation investment environment in the district.
The Intel Zizhu site is one of Intel's largest and most comprehensive R&D centers in Asia with 2,000 Intel engineers, managers and leaders from most major Intel business groups, and has seen local development of strong technical leadership including two senior principal engineers and seven principal engineers, said Smith.
Shanghai has set an agenda to build the city into a science and technology innovation center with global influence, and policymakers have been offering a wide range of services to talent and enterprises to encourage innovation and R&D activities, said Chen Ding, vice general manager with China (Shanghai) Network Audi-Visual Industry Base Shanghai Zizhu Creativity Hub Co Ltd.
Chen said in the age of fast developing cloud computing and the Internet of Things, start-ups and small-and-medium sized enterprises based in China can leverage resources from MNCs operating in Shanghai, while MNCs can also take advantage of the surging number of ICT talent in the region.
